PIERRE, SD - During the 93rd annual AGC of America Convention March 15 in Honolulu, HI, the AGC of South Dakota, HHU chapter, received a 2012 Chapter Public Relations Award, in the Best Infrastructure Public Relations Campaign category.
The Pothole Fairy Goes to Pierre, featuring Williams & Ree, was the campaign that highlighted South Dakota’s funding issues which received constituent support and achieved passage of legislation on behalf of South Dakota and the construction industry. The planning process for the campaign was a collaborative effort among the AGC of South Dakota’s PR Committee Members, Government Affairs Committee, infrastructure-friendly legislators, AGC’s lobbyist, and media consultancy, Media One Advertising.
“We could not be more thrilled with the results of this campaign and feel proud of the way we were able to make a difference not just for our state but also for our industry as a whole. It is our sincere hope that this program may serve as a case study for other chapters to use in their own districts to encourage involvement in the legislative process.” Said Jim Soukup, 2011 President, Associated General Contractors of South Dakota, Highway Heavy Utilities Chapter.
The goal of the campaign was to raise awareness of the need to increase funding for road improvements. The overall message was there is no “Pothole Fairy” that will magically repair the roads. South Dakota residents needed our legislators to take action and pass legislation that would increase funding, and provide the means necessary to perform road repairs and improvements. Thankfully, the legislators heard the message, and passed HB 1192.
The AGC of America’s Chapter Public Relations Awards recognize top chapter achievements in public relations during the calendar year of 2011. “I fell honored to represent the AGC of SD in receiving this award. For me, it reinforces why our company is a member of the AGC of SD: because when we work together as an industry, we can accomplish good things for the people of South Dakota.” stated Public Relations Committee Chair, Patty Nohr.
The AGC of South Dakota, Highway-Heavy-Utilities Chapter, is a voluntary trade association of more than 250 contractors, suppliers and service firms who build the roads, bridges and water/wastewater infrastructure in South Dakota.
