Legislative

The overall goal of the AGC legislative platform is to advance and protect the construction industry in South Dakota Government Affairs Arena – AGC Government Affairs focuses on the annual Legislative Session, pertinent summer study and committee meetings, business of local governments, and ballot issues and referred laws that affect business in general and the construction industry in particular.

Specific priorities

  • To pursue expansion of road and bridge funding in South Dakota. Main goal is a motor fuel tax increase. Other methods to support include motor vehicle excise tax, county bonding efforts, or redirection of other fees and funds.

  • To protect road and bridge funding that is in place. The goal is to ensure that no poaching of current revenue streams occurs. Examples include counties attempting to use money from road fund for other uses, further diversions from the highway fund, attempts to use airport construction and maintenance money for other uses.

  • To protect the general business climate. The goal is to ensure that contractors do not bear unnecessary burdens in UI taxes or workers compensation fees. Additionally, AGC will work for laws that make business easier, like one central web location for public bids, etc.

  • To protect the current business model: The goal is to defend against encroachment of union organizers, limits on PAC contributions; attempts to reduce economic development, etc.

  • To support economic activity and investment that would lead to increased markets for our members.

  • Monitor federal highway funding for South Dakota
